IPL is known for its thrilling matches and nail-biting finishes. However, not every team has had the luck of lifting the coveted trophy. Some have faced repeated heartbreaks, especially in the playoffs.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB): 10 Defeats

As of IPL 2024, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) fans are heartbroken yet again. Despite a solid comeback in the league stage, they were knocked out of the IPL 2024 playoffs by Rajasthan Royals. This loss marked a new record for RCB – they are now the first team in IPL history to suffer 10 defeats in the playoffs!
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC): 9 Defeats Each

Despite being the team with the most IPL finals a record 10 times, CSK has lost nine of those matches. However, they have managed to win the championship five times (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023), making them one of the most successful franchises in IPL history and proving their overall strength.
Similar to CSK, DC has also suffered nine playoff defeats. They’ve only managed to win two knockout games so far. They were semi-finalists in the first two seasons (2008 and 2009) and topped the league stage in 2012. Their best performance came in 2020 when they reached the final but were defeated by Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): 7 Defeats Each

These two teams have a slightly better playoff record compared to the above three. Both MI and SRH have lost seven playoff matches each. MI, however, has emerged victorious in five IPL finals (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020), making them the second most successful team in the league’s history.
SRH, on the other hand, managed to win the IPL title once in 2016.
The upcoming IPL seasons will be interesting to watch, especially for these teams with a history of playoff struggles. While RCB leads with the most playoff defeats, teams like CSK, DC, MI, and SRH have also encountered their share of disappointments. Despite these challenges, the resilience and spirit of these teams keep the IPL as exciting and unpredictable as ever.
