Bumrah’s Tally of Maidens in T20I Reaches 11, Breaks Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Record

 

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, began his T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a record-breaking performance during the Group A match against Ireland. The game took place at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday, June 5.

 

In a match where India won the toss and chose to field first, Bumrah’s bowling brilliance shone brightly. Despite not opening the bowling, Bumrah was introduced in the fifth over and immediately made an impact by bowling a maiden. This over not only maintained the pressure on the Irish batsmen but also marked a significant milestone in Bumrah’s career.

 

With this maiden over, Bumrah broke Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s record for the most maidens bowled by a player from a Test-playing nation in T20 Internationals. Bumrah’s tally now stands at 11 maidens, setting a new benchmark for bowlers from full member nations in the shortest format of international cricket. Only two bowlers worldwide have bowled more maidens in T20Is: Frank Nsubuga from Uganda with 15 and Shem Ngoche from Kenya with 14.

 

Bumrah’s maiden was part of a dominant performance by India’s pace attack. The quartet of Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, and Bumrah dismantled the Irish batting lineup, restricting them to a paltry 96 runs. Arshdeep took 2 wickets for 35 runs, Siraj claimed 1 wicket for 13 runs, Bumrah took 2 wickets for just 6 runs, and Pandya was the top wicket-taker with 3 wickets for 27 runs.

 

India’s bowlers exploited the variable bounce and seam movement on offer, leaving the Irish batsmen struggling to find their footing.
