Kohli, Rohit and Jadeja Announce T20I Retirement

India’s historic win at the T20 World Cup 2024 was not just about lifting the trophy after a long wait, it also marked the farewell of three of the team’s most celebrated players. In a dramatic turn of events, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja all announced their retirement from T20 Internationals, leaving a bittersweet taste for Indian cricket fans.

The final against South Africa was a nail-biting encounter, with India posting a strong score of 176 runs on the board. Virat Kohli, who had been struggling for form throughout the tournament, finally found his rhythm, scoring a crucial 76 – his first half-century of the World Cup. Axar Patel’s knock of 47 runs further bolstered India’s position.

With the bat out of the way, it was the bowlers who sealed the deal, restricting South Africa to 169 runs and clinching a thrilling seven-run victory. The win was India’s second T20 World Cup title, finally breaking an 11-year ICC trophy drought.

However, the celebrations were tinged with emotion as both Kohli and Rohit Sharma used the post-match press conference to announce their retirement from the T20 format. Kohli, visibly emotional, spoke about the pressure of expectation and the importance of paving the way for younger players.

“This was my last T20 World Cup, this is exactly what we wanted to achieve. One day you feel like you can’t get a run and this happens, God is great. Just the occasion, now or never kind of situation,Kohli Said.

Rohit Sharma, India’s captain throughout the tournament, echoed Kohli’s sentiment.

This is my last game as well, no better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my career for India playing this format and this is what I wanted, I wanted to win the World Cup,” Rohit said, overwhelmed with the emotions of the victory.

Adding to the surprise, seasoned all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also announced his retirement from T20Is on social media the following day.

With a heart full of gratitude, I bid farewell to T20 internationals. Like a steadfast horse galloping with pride, I’ve always given my best for my country and will continue to do so in other formats,” he wrote, pledging to continue representing India in ODIs and Tests.

The retirements of Kohli, Sharma, and Jadeja mark a significant shift for Indian T20 cricket. These three players have been instrumental in shaping the team’s success over the years, and their absence will leave a big void. However, their decision also paves the way for a new generation of players to take center stage and carry forward the legacy they have built.
