Australia Win a Thrilling ODI Series 3-2 Against England

In a rain-affected fifth ODI, Australia defeated England by 49 runs via the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method to claim the series 3-2. The victory capped off an exciting series where Australia held a 2-0 lead before England fought back to level 2-2, forcing the final match to decide the winner.

England Post 309, Spinners Lead Australia’s Fightback

Winning the toss, Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith opted to bowl first, allowing England to bat. The hosts made a rapid start, with opener Phil Salt smashing 45 off just 27 balls, setting the tone for a high-scoring innings. Ben Duckett followed suit with a brilliant 107 off 91 balls, his second ODI century at this venue, while captain Harry Brook contributed a quick-fire 72 from 52 balls, hitting seven sixes. England appeared set for a massive total at 202-2 before Australia’s spinners turned the game around.

Travis Head, who would later shine with the bat, was the pick of the bowlers with 4-28 in just 6.2 overs. The turning point came when Harry Brook holed out to Adam Zampa, triggering a collapse. England’s aggressive momentum was halted, and they lost eight wickets for 107 runs, eventually being bowled out for 309 in 49.2 overs.

Australia’s spin attack was crucial throughout the series, with 23 wickets falling to their spinners across the five games, the most ever for Australian spinners in a bilateral series. Zampa, who took two wickets in this match, finished as the second-highest wicket-taker of the series, while Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Hardie also chipped in with two wickets each.

Australia Off to a Flying Start

In response to England’s 309, Australia made a lightning-fast start, racing to 103-1 after 10 overs. Opener Travis Head contributed 31 before falling to Brydon Carse, but it was Matthew Short’s explosive 58 off just 30 balls that gave Australia the early momentum. Short’s aggressive innings, which included nine boundaries, ensured that Australia stayed ahead of the required DLS rate.

When rain interrupted play in the 21st over, Australia was comfortably ahead at 165-2. With no more play possible, Australia was declared winners by 49 runs under the DLS method, securing a 3-2 series triumph.

A Historic Win

The fifth ODI victory not only gave Australia the series win but also ended a two-match losing streak against England. Australia, who had seen their 14-match winning run snapped earlier in the series, reaffirmed their status as a formidable force in world cricket. This series win is an important marker as Australia prepare to defend their World Cup title in the near future.

With the thrilling 3-2 series win secured, Australia have once again shown their prowess in the 50-over format, proving they can bounce back when it matters most.
