Chaminda Vaas Joins Delhi Capitals as Bowling Coach for IPL 2027, Reunites with Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh

Delhi Capitals have strengthened their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027 by appointing former Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas as their fast-bowling coach. The appointment marks Vaas’s return to the Indian Premier League after 16 years, this time in a coaching role rather than as a player.

Vaas will work alongside former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who has been appointed head coach, and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who has joined as assistant and batting coach. The new-look support staff brings together experience from international cricket and the IPL as Delhi Capitals prepare for the upcoming season.

The appointment is another significant development in Delhi Capitals’ preparations for IPL 2027. The franchise will look to improve its performances and build a balanced squad capable of challenging for the title.

Chaminda Vaas Returns to the IPL After 16 Years

Chaminda Vaas is one of Sri Lanka’s most accomplished fast bowlers. He finished his international career with 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI wickets, establishing himself as a key figure in Sri Lankan cricket across formats.

Vaas previously played in the IPL for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers during the tournament’s first three seasons, from 2008 to 2010. His return to the competition for IPL 2027 will be his first IPL coaching assignment.

His appointment gives Delhi Capitals a specialist fast-bowling coach with extensive international experience. Vaas’s background in swing bowling, seam movement and developing pace bowlers could be valuable as the franchise prepares its bowling attack for the new season.

Although his playing days in the IPL ended in 2010, his involvement in coaching has continued through several assignments with national teams and franchise competitions.

Vaas Joins Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh at Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals are building a new coaching structure for IPL 2027, with three well-known former international players taking prominent roles.

Sourav Ganguly – Head Coach

Ganguly was officially appointed Delhi Capitals head coach on October 6, 2026. His association with the franchise began in 2019, and he has previously served in advisory and cricket leadership positions within the wider Capitals setup.

His appointment places him at the centre of the team’s preparations, including player development, tactical planning and the overall direction of the squad.

Yuvraj Singh – Assistant and Batting Coach

Yuvraj Singh has joined Delhi Capitals as assistant and batting coach. The former India all-rounder brings extensive experience from international cricket, including major ICC tournament victories, and has mentored several established and emerging Indian players.

The role marks his first formal coaching position and his debut as an IPL coach. He is expected to work with Delhi’s batters and support the team’s broader coaching plans.

Chaminda Vaas – Fast-Bowling Coach

Vaas completes a key part of the revamped coaching leadership by taking responsibility for the fast bowlers. His international playing record and previous coaching assignments give Delhi Capitals an experienced specialist to guide the pace attack.

Together, Ganguly, Yuvraj and Vaas will bring different perspectives to the coaching setup, covering team leadership, batting development and fast bowling.

Chaminda Vaas’s Coaching Experience

Vaas has worked in coaching and player-development roles since his playing career. He has been associated with the Sri Lanka men’s team across multiple stints between 2012 and 2022, contributing to the development of the country’s fast bowlers.

His coaching experience also includes work as a consultant with the New Zealand men’s team and a stint with Ireland during the 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He has additionally worked with Sri Lanka Cricket as a fast-bowling consultant and academy mentor.

At franchise level, Vaas coached NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and served as head coach of Kandy Royals in the Lanka Premier League in 2026.

These assignments have given him experience in different team environments and formats. His move to Delhi Capitals will now bring that experience into the IPL, where coaching decisions must account for the tournament’s demanding schedule, changing conditions and overseas-player combinations.

What Vaas Could Bring to Delhi Capitals’ Bowling Attack

Fast bowling can play a decisive role in the IPL, particularly when teams need to manage powerplays, middle overs and high-pressure death overs. Delhi Capitals will hope Vaas can help their pace attack improve its consistency across those phases.

His experience as a left-arm fast bowler could also provide a useful perspective on bowling variations, swing, angles and match-ups against different batters.
