Ishan Kishan Recovering Well but Ruled Out of Third T20I Against New Zealand

India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the third T20 International against New Zealand in Wellington as he continues recovering from a right adductor strain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on October 26, 2026, that Kishan is improving but has not yet regained the match fitness required to return to the playing XI.

The third T20I is scheduled for October 27 at Wellington’s Hnry Stadium. India will enter the contest with a 2–0 lead in the five-match series and an opportunity to secure the series with two matches still remaining.

BCCI Provides Update on Ishan Kishan’s Injury

Kishan sustained a low-grade right adductor strain during the opening T20I against New Zealand. The injury forced him to miss the second match in Christchurch, and he will now sit out the third encounter as well.

According to the BCCI, Kishan is recovering well, but the medical team continues to monitor his progress. The board has not announced a confirmed date for his return.

The decision to rule him out of the Wellington match means India will avoid rushing the wicketkeeper-batter back before he is fully fit. An adductor strain can affect movement, acceleration and running between the wickets, making match readiness important for a player in a demanding international schedule.

Kumar Kushagra Continues as Cover

Kumar Kushagra, who joined the squad as cover after Kishan was ruled out of the second T20I, will remain with the team for the Wellington match.

Kishan’s absence also provided an opportunity for teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who came into India’s playing XI for the second T20I. The team management will determine its final combination for the third match based on its selection requirements and available players.

Sanju Samson remains another wicketkeeping option for India. However, the confirmed squad update does not by itself establish the final playing XI for the Wellington contest.

India Look to Seal the T20I Series

India have made a strong start to the New Zealand tour, winning the first two matches to take a 2–0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

The visitors won the opening match by four wickets after successfully chasing 226, their highest successful run chase in men’s T20I cricket at the time of the match. India then followed up with another victory in Christchurch to move within one win of securing the series.

The third T20I presents an opportunity for India to clinch the series early. New Zealand, meanwhile, will need a victory to keep the contest alive and take the pressure off their remaining fixtures.

When Will Ishan Kishan Return?

Kishan’s return will depend on his recovery and the medical team’s assessment of his match fitness. The BCCI has confirmed that he is progressing well, but it has not provided a specific timeline for his comeback.

India will be keen to have the left-handed batter available again, given his ability to score quickly and contribute as a wicketkeeper. For now, the priority is ensuring he is ready to compete without aggravating the injury.

Conclusion: Ishan Kishan will miss the third T20I against New Zealand despite encouraging signs in his recovery. With Kumar Kushagra remaining as cover and India leading the series 2–0, attention now turns to the Wellington match and the timing of Kishan’s return.
