India Become First Team to Record 200 Men’s T20I Wins After Beating New Zealand

India created history by becoming the first team to register 200 victories in men’s T20 Internationals after defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the second match of their five-game series in Christchurch on October 24, 2026.

Chasing a target of 181 at Hagley Oval, India recovered from a difficult position of 70/5 to reach 181/6 in 19.5 overs. Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy produced a match-winning partnership to secure the victory and give India a 2-0 lead in the series.

India Reach Historic 200-Win Milestone

India’s victory marked a significant achievement in men’s T20I cricket. The team reached 200 wins from 300 matches since making its T20I debut in 2006.

India have recorded 200 wins and 83 defeats, with seven tied matches and 10 matches ending without a result. Pakistan are next on the list of total victories, with 176 wins from 304 T20Is, followed by New Zealand with 135 wins from 269 matches.

The milestone reflects India’s consistency in the shortest international format across different generations of players and major tournaments.

Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy Rescue India

India’s chase looked uncertain after the team lost five wickets for 70 runs. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner played a crucial role in putting the visitors under pressure, taking four wickets for 21 runs.

Tilak Varma held his ground and played a composed innings under pressure. He remained unbeaten on 51 from 26 balls, striking six fours and a six.

Nitish Kumar Reddy provided valuable support with an unbeaten 26 off just 13 deliveries. The pair added 69 runs without being separated in 30 balls, setting a new Indian record for the highest partnership for the seventh wicket in men’s T20Is.

India needed 11 runs from the final over but completed the chase with one ball remaining. Their partnership turned a difficult situation into a memorable victory.

Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs Lift New Zealand to 180/5

Earlier, New Zealand posted 180/5 after being asked to bat. India’s bowlers made an encouraging start, reducing the hosts to 41/3 during the Powerplay.

Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs then rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 116 runs. Phillips scored 70 from 43 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, while Jacobs contributed 58 off 46 deliveries.

Their partnership gave New Zealand a competitive total despite the early wickets. Arshdeep Singh claimed two wickets for India, while Prince Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Nitish Kumar Reddy also made contributions with the ball.

The total appeared challenging when India lost wickets during the chase, but Varma and Reddy eventually turned the contest around.

Mitchell Santner’s Four Wickets Not Enough

Santner was New Zealand’s most effective bowler, taking four wickets and putting India’s middle order under considerable pressure.

His spell left India needing a substantial partnership to stay in the contest. Naman Dhir had earlier scored a quick 31 off 17 balls, but his dismissal increased the pressure on the remaining batters.

Varma responded with a measured approach, combining boundary-hitting with careful shot selection. Reddy’s aggressive contribution at the other end ensured that the required rate remained manageable in the final overs.

Despite Santner’s outstanding bowling, New Zealand could not prevent India from reaching the target.

India Take a 2-0 Lead in the T20I Series

The four-wicket win gave India a 2-0 advantage in the five-match series, leaving three matches to play.

The result also provided India with momentum after another successful run chase in the opening match. New Zealand will look to respond in the next game, while India will aim to maintain their winning form and extend their lead.

India’s record-breaking victory was built on resilience, with Varma and Reddy showing composure when the team was under pressure.

What This Record Means for Indian Cricket

Reaching 200 men’s T20I victories underlines India’s sustained success in a format that demands adaptability, depth and strong performances in high-pressure situations.

The Christchurch match also highlighted the importance of contributions from the lower order. When India’s top and middle order struggled, Varma and Reddy stepped up and produced the partnership needed to finish the game.

India will now turn their attention to the remaining fixtures against New Zealand, with the opportunity to build on their series lead.

For cricket fans, the milestone is another landmark in India’s T20I journey and a reminder of the team’s ability to recover from difficult match situations.
