3 Players with Most Runs in T20 World Cup

The T20 World Cup is a spectacle of power-hitting, audacious strokeplay, and nail-biting finishes. But amidst all the sixes and last-ball heroics, some players consistently stand out with their ability to pile on the runs. Here, we take a look at the top three run-scorers in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli

At the top of the pile sits the Indian batting maestro, Virat Kohli. With a staggering total of 1,141 runs in just 27 matches, Kohli holds the record for the most runs scored in the T20 World Cup. Not only does he score a lot of runs, but he scores them incredibly quickly. His average of 81.50 is simply phenomenal, highlighting his ability to transform a low count into big scores.

Kohli’s dominance is further emphasized by his 13 fifties and a mind-boggling strike rate of over 130. While his highest score remains an unbeaten 89 against West Indies in 2016, his consistent run-scoring has made him a nightmare for bowlers in the T20 World Cup.

Mahela Jayawardene

The second spot on the list belongs to the legendary Sri Lankan batsman, Mahela Jayawardene. Renowned for his graceful strokeplay and tactical intelligence, Jayawardene amassed a total of 1,016 runs in 31 T20 World Cup matches. While his average of 39.07 might not seem as eye-catching as Kohli’s, his strike rate of 134.74 showcases his ability to rush when needed.

He smashed a staggering 302 runs in the 2010 edition held in the Caribbean, averaging a mind-blowing 60.40 and striking at a breathtaking rate of 159.78. This included the first-ever century by a Sri Lankan batsman in the T20 World Cup, scoring against the hosts, West Indies in 2010.

Chris Gayle

The list wouldn’t be complete without the “Universe Boss,” Chris Gayle. The West Indian opener is synonymous with power-hitting in T20 cricket, and the T20 World Cup stage has been no different. Gayle holds the record for the most sixes in T20 cricket, and his explosive batting style has translated well into the World Cup, smashing 965 runs in 33 matches. While his average of 34.46 might be a bit lower than the top two, his strike rate of 142.75 ensures he scores his runs quickly and keeps the scoreboard ticking.

These three batting giants have etched their names in the history books of the T20 World Cup with their phenomenal run-scoring exploits. Their consistent performances have not only entertained fans but also played a crucial role in defining the outcome of several matches.
