Chahal Becomes First Bowler to Take 200 Wickets In IPL

Indian cricket star Yuzvendra Chahal has become the absolute king of spin in the IPL! He is the first bowler in the entire history of the league to take a whopping 200 wickets.

Chahal achieved this amazing feat while playing for the Rajasthan Royals against the Mumbai Indians. He dismissed batsman Mohammad Nabi with a clever legbreak, which Nabi could only manage to pop back up for Chahal to catch himself.

This record-breaking moment came in Chahal’s 153rd IPL match. Even though his team didn’t win this particular game, Chahal’s achievement is a huge milestone for the spinner.

“I never even thought about it [becoming the highest wicket-taker] when I started playing the IPL,” Chahal had said last year after toppling Bravo. “I was with Mumbai Indians for three years [when I started], but my journey actually started from 2014. There have been a lot of ups and downs, and I’ve enjoyed a lot too. I’ve learnt from my downs, and what I’m today is because of my downfalls and [support from] my close ones.”

Many fans might not remember, but Chahal actually started his IPL journey with the Mumbai Indians in 2011. However, he never got a chance to play much for them. In his only match, he couldn’t take any wickets.

Things changed for Chahal in 2014 when he joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore. This is where he truly became a star player in the IPL. Over eight seasons with RCB, Chahal took an incredible 139 wickets! He did this with amazing bowling skills, keeping the runs scored against him very low on average.

Although RCB let Chahal go in the big IPL auction of 2022, the Rajasthan Royals knew his talent and picked him up.  In his first year with the Royals, Chahal continued his wicket-taking ways, grabbing 27 wickets and even achieving his best ever IPL bowling performance – taking 5 wickets in just 4 overs!

Chahal is currently the leading wicket-taker in the 2024 IPL season, tied with two other bowlers. With many more matches to play, there’s a good chance Chahal can add even more wickets to his record-breaking total!

Last year, Mohammed Siraj was the star bowler of the IPL. He dominated the first six overs of innings, taking wickets and barely giving away any runs. This season, however, things have gone terribly wrong for Siraj. In 2023, Siraj was the second-highest wicket-taker in the powerplay, just behind Mohammed Shami. He was so good that his bowling average was just under 6 runs per over
