Mumbai Indians have appointed former India cricketer Robin Uthappa as their new batting coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The five-time IPL champions have announced a revamped coaching staff as they prepare for the upcoming campaign under newly appointed head coach Kieron Pollard.
Uthappa will take responsibility for the team’s batting department, bringing his extensive experience in Indian domestic cricket, international cricket and franchise T20 competitions to the Mumbai Indians setup.
The franchise has also confirmed several other coaching appointments as part of its preparations for IPL 2027. New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan has been named bowling coach, while T. Dilip will serve as the fielding coach. Former Mumbai Indians pacer Dhawal Kulkarni has been appointed development bowling coach.
Robin Uthappa’s appointment marks another connection with Mumbai Indians, having previously represented the franchise during the inaugural IPL season in 2008.
The former India batter was an important member of India’s squad that won the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007. Throughout his playing career, Uthappa established himself as an experienced top-order batter, particularly in limited-overs cricket.
His understanding of Indian playing conditions and experience across different T20 environments could prove valuable as Mumbai Indians look to strengthen their batting department for the next IPL season.
This will also be an important opportunity for Uthappa as he takes on a major coaching responsibility within one of the IPL’s most successful franchises.

The coaching changes come after Kieron Pollard was promoted to head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene.
Pollard has a long association with Mumbai Indians, having represented the franchise as a player and later worked as its batting coach. He was part of all five of Mumbai Indians’ IPL title-winning campaigns in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
His promotion represents a significant change in the franchise’s coaching structure ahead of IPL 2027.
With Pollard leading the coaching group and Uthappa handling batting responsibilities, Mumbai Indians will hope to build a strong environment for their players and improve their performances in the upcoming season.
Mumbai Indians have also strengthened their bowling coaching department with two familiar names.
Former New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan has been appointed bowling coach. He previously represented Mumbai Indians between 2015 and 2020 and was part of four IPL title-winning campaigns with the franchise.
Meanwhile, former Indian pacer Dhawal Kulkarni will take charge as development bowling coach. Kulkarni has also represented Mumbai Indians and was part of their championship-winning squads in 2013 and 2020.
His primary responsibility will involve supporting the development of bowling resources, particularly young Indian bowlers.
T. Dilip has also joined the coaching group as fielding coach. He previously worked with the Indian men’s cricket team and was part of its coaching setup during several major ICC tournament victories.

The appointments indicate a fresh direction for Mumbai Indians as they prepare for the 2027 edition of the Indian Premier League.
The franchise has combined experienced former players with established coaching professionals to strengthen different areas of its support staff.
With Robin Uthappa handling batting, Mitchell McClenaghan overseeing bowling, T. Dilip managing fielding and Dhawal Kulkarni focusing on bowling development, the franchise has assembled a coaching group with considerable cricketing experience.
The biggest challenge for the new coaching setup will be to translate that experience into consistent performances on the field.
Mumbai Indians supporters will be keen to see how the revamped coaching structure performs when the IPL 2027 season begins.
