Ravichandran Ashwin has added yet another record to his name, the achievement all of India has been waiting for, becoming only the second Indian bowler and ninth overall to reach the coveted milestone of 500 Test wickets.
The off-spinner achieved this feat during the action-packed third Test against England in Rajkot, rewriting history. The off-spinner was on 499 scalps at the end of the second Test in Vizag. On Day 2 of the action-packed 3rd Test between India and England at Saurashtra’s Niranjan Shah Stadium, Ashwin completed his 500th with the wicket of Zak Crawley.
What makes this achievement even more special is the speed at which he has achieved it. Ashwin reached the landmark in just 98 Tests, the second-fastest in history after the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan. This speaks volumes about his consistency and skill, as each of the other seven bowlers in the 500-wicket club took more than 100 Tests to reach the milestone. Ashwin, who has been the fastest Indian to reach 50, 100, 150, 200, 350, 400, and 450 Test wickets, is also the fastest in the world to reach 250 and 300 Test wickets.
Ashwin’s journey to 500 has been nothing short of remarkable. Since his debut in 2011 against West Indies, he has been India’s go-to bowler in Tests. His spin magic has troubled batsmen worldwide, particularly at home, where 347 of his 500 wickets have come. Ashwin is the ninth bowler in Test history to breach the 500-wicket barrier and the only one from India since Anil Kumble. Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, Anil Kumble, and Nathan Lyon are the only other spinners ahead of him in the list of highest wicket-takers in Test history. Overall, Ashwin has taken 25711 balls, next only to the legendary Glenn McGrath who required 25528.
Ashwin’s impact on Indian cricket has been undeniable. He has played a pivotal role in numerous Test victories, bamboozling batsmen with his variations and guile. His 34 five-wicket hauls and eight 10-wicket match hauls show to his ability to single-handedly change the course of a game.
While reaching 500 is a moment of immense pride, Ashwin shows no signs of slowing down. Currently, he is the only active spinner alongside James Anderson and Nathan Lyon to have crossed the 400-wicket mark in Tests. With his hunger for wickets and his passion for the game, there’s no doubt that Ashwin has the potential to add many more chapters to his already illustrious career.
