IPL Purple Cap Winners

The new season of the IPL cricket league starts on March 22nd with a big game between the winners from last year, the Chennai Super Kings, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. This season, bowlers will again be competing for the Purple Cap.

This cap is a special prize given to the bowler who takes the most wickets throughout the entire IPL season.  Only two bowlers, Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, have ever won the Purple Cap twice!

 

All bowlers to have won Purple Cap from 2008 to 2023:

 

Sohail Tanvir (2008)

The Rajasthan Royals, led by late Shane Warne, surprisingly won the very first IPL season! A big reason for their success was Sohail Tanvir, a fast bowler from Pakistan. He was on fire that year, taking a whopping 22 wickets!

 

RP Singh (2009)

RP Singh was a star bowler for the Deccan Chargers in 2009! He bowled really well that season, taking an impressive 23 wickets throughout the entire IPL tournament.

 

Pragyan Ojha (2010)

In the 2010 IPL season, Pragyan Ojha, who played for the Deccan Chargers, was the bowler who took the most wickets! He ended up winning the special Purple Cap award with a total of 21 wickets in just 16 games.

 

Lasith Malinga (2011)

Back in 2011, playing for Mumbai Indians star player Lasith Malinga, grabbed everyone’s attention with his blazing speed and pinpoint yorkers. The Sri Lankan cricket legend emerged as the top-performing bowler of the season, taking an impressive 28 wickets in 16 games.

 

Morne Morkel (2012)

Delhi Capitals has seen its fair share of legendary cricketers, and among them was the South African fast bowler Morne Morkel. In the 2012 season, he showcased his exceptional bowling abilities by taking 25 wickets in 16 matches, including a notable four-wicket haul against Kolkata Knight Riders. Morkel’s impressive performance added to the list of memorable contributions from renowned players who have represented Delhi Capitals over the years.

 

Dwayne Bravo (2013)

Dwayne Bravo, currently serving as the bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings, has a remarkable history with the franchise, winning the IPL trophy four times during his playing days. Although CSK narrowly missed out on the title in 2013, Bravo displayed exceptional skills with the ball. The cricket legend from the Caribbean had a standout performance, claiming a total of 32 wickets throughout the season and earning the prestigious Purple Cap for being the highest wicket-taker.

 

Mohit Sharma (2014)

In the 2014 season of the IPL, Mohit Sharma, who was playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), showed everyone how good he was. He bowled really well in the IPL that year, taking 23 wickets in 16 games.

 

Dwayne Bravo (2015)

In the 2015 season, Dwayne Bravo secured his second Purple Cap as the top wicket-taker. Despite CSK finishing as the runners-up after losing to MI in the final, the all-rounder had an impressive campaign, taking a total of 26 wickets.

 

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016)

In the 2016 season, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar featured in 17 matches during the campaign and managed to take an impressive tally of 23 wickets, securing the coveted Purple Cap as the season’s leading wicket-taker. Kumar’s remarkable bowling contributions played a crucial role in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s success that year.

 

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2017)

Despite Sunrisers Hyderabad not retaining the title in 2017, Bhuvneshwar Kumar continued his stellar performance and secured the Purple Cap for the second consecutive time. The Indian pace bowler concluded the competition with an impressive tally of 26 wickets, showcasing his consistent and impactful bowling skills during the season.

 

Andrew Tye (2018)

Andrew Tye made a significant impact while playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the 2018 IPL season. Known for his amazing variations, particularly in the death overs, Tye caught everyone’s attention, showcasing his expertise by taking an impressive 24 wickets in just 14 games during that season, earning him the well-deserved Purple Cap as the leading wicket-taker.

 

Imran Tahir (2019)

In the 2019 IPL final, CSK experienced a close and unfortunate one-wicket loss against their arch-rivals, MI. However, one of CSK’s standout performers that season was Imran Tahir. The South African spinner claimed the top spot on the list of leading wicket-takers. Tahir had a remarkable season, taking a total of 26 wickets, showcasing his effectiveness and skill as a spin bowler in the tournament.

 

Kagiso Rabada (2020)

In the 2020 IPL, Kasigo Rabada made a significant impact with his impressive pace. Playing for the Delhi-based franchise, the South African player garnered attention for his formidable bowling skills. Throughout the season, he managed to take an outstanding 30 wickets in 17 matches, highlighting his effectiveness and dominance as a fast bowler in the tournament.

 

Harshal Patel (2021)

In the 2021 IPL season, bowler Harshal Patel from RCB took the most wickets ever in a single IPL season! He was really fast and grabbed an amazing 32 wickets in just 15 games, tying the record set by Dwayne Bravo.

 

Yuzvendra Chahal (2022)

In the 2022 IPL, Yuzvendra Chahal took 27 wickets for Rajasthan Royals! RR almost won the whole thing, but they came in second place after losing the final match to the Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya.

 

Mohammad Shami (2023)

In the last IPL (2023), Mohammad Shami bowled for the Gujarat Titans, who almost won the championship! They ended up as the runners-up after losing a close final to CSK. Shami won the Purple Cap with a whopping 28 wickets in 17 matches.
