Most unbeaten centuries across all three formats

Cricket is a game of records and milestones, and one of the most coveted achievements for any batsman is to score a century. A century is a mark of excellence, a sign of dominance, and it’s more special when they are unbeaten.

What is an unbeaten century? An unbeaten century means that the batsman has not been dismissed by the opposition and has carried his bat through the innings. It shows that the batsman has been in complete control of his game and the batsman has played a crucial role in the outcome of the match, either by setting a huge target or by chasing it down.

Today, we will look at the three batsmen who have scored the most unbeaten centuries in each of the three formats of the game: Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. These are the unbeaten masters who have shown their class across different conditions and situations.

Tests: Shivnarine Chanderpaul

The most number of unbeaten centuries in Tests belongs to the former West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul. The left-handed legend played 164 Tests for his country and scored 30 centuries, out of which 18 were unbeaten approx. 60% of his Test hundreds, which is an incredible feat.

Chanderpaul was a master of playing long innings and grinding down the opposition. Out of his 18 unbeaten Test centuries, 11 were scored in the fourth innings of the match, which is the most by any batsman in Test history. He also holds the record for the highest fourth-innings score by a batsman, which was 116 not out, and remained unbeaten in 4 innings even after playing 1051 balls, against India in 2002. Chanderpaul’s highest unbeaten Test score was 203 not out against South Africa in 2005.

ODIs: Virat Kohli

The most number of unbeaten centuries in ODIs belongs to Virat Kohli. The right-handed superstar has played 292 ODIs for his team and has scored 50 centuries, out of which 19 were unbeaten, which is roughly 38% of his ODI hundreds, which is a remarkable achievement.

Kohli is widely regarded as one of the best batsmen of the modern era and one of the greatest chasers of all time. He has a phenomenal record in chasing targets and has scored 26 ODI centuries while batting second, out of which 15 were unbeaten. He also holds the record for the most runs scored in successful ODI chases: 5786 runs in 96 innings. Maybe that’s why he is often regarded as the run machine and the No. 1 Chase Master in cricket.

T20Is: Glenn Maxwell

The most number of unbeaten centuries in T20Is belongs to the recent Australia sensation Glenn Maxwell. The right-handed batter has played 94 T20Is for his side and has scored five centuries, out of which all five were unbeaten. This means that he has never been dismissed after reaching the three-figure mark in T20Is!

Maxwell, known for his explosive batting and sixes, is one of the most versatile batsmen in T20Is and can bat at any position in the order. He has scored his five unbeaten T20I centuries while batting at different positions: No.3, No.4, No.5 and No.6. Maxwell’s highest unbeaten T20I score was 145 not out off 65 balls against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2016.

These three unbeaten masters who have shown their excellence in scoring centuries across all three formats of the game, are the role models for any aspiring batsman.
