The Indian fans as well as Gujarat Titans (GT) received a major setback as Mohammed Shami, their key player, has been ruled out of the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Shami, who played a crucial role in India’s performance in the ODI World Cup, suffered an ankle injury post the tournament. The ace pacer missed the Test series vs South Africa and was also not part of the squad for the five-match series vs England.
According to a BCCI official, Shami’s current treatment for the ankle injury has not received positive results and now needs surgery. The talented pacer had an outstanding IPL career, by taking bagging 20 wickets in 2022 as well as 28 wickets in 2023 for Gujarat Titans. This remarkable performance played an important role in guiding the team to their second consecutive final. In the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Shami took 24 wickets in seven matches, at an average of 10.70 and a strike rate of 12.20, with the best figures of 7/57. Shami had three five-wicket hauls and a four-wicket haul in the tournament and also gained the best bowling figures by an Indian in WC history.
In the past two IPL seasons, Shami showcased his bowling skills while representing Gujarat Giants, contributing significantly to the team’s success. His absence will be deeply felt by GT fans, who are already recovering from the departure of the former captain Hardik Pandya. Pandya is now with Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024. Pandya led GT to victory in IPL 2022, but the team faced defeat against CSK in the final of the previous edition. Following Pandya’s exit, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain for the upcoming IPL season.
Now the most important question revolving in the minds of the cricket fans is about Shami’s availability for the T20 World Cup which follows the IPL 2024. With doubts surrounding his return for the IPL, it seems highly unlikely that Shami will be fit in time for India’s Test matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand scheduled for October-November.
As fans await updates on Shami’s recovery, the focus shifts to how the team and the player navigate these challenging times, aiming for a successful return to the cricketing arena.
