Shikhar Dhawan Calls Time on His Cricket Career

Indian cricket star Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket, ending a career marked by consistent performances and a strong impact on the Indian team.

In a heartfelt video message shared on social media, Dhawan expressed his gratitude to fans, teammates, and coaches who supported him throughout his journey. He admitted that while there was sadness in leaving the game, he was at peace knowing he had given his all for India.

I am thankful for so many people who contributed in my journey. First of all my family. My childhood coach Late Tarak Sinha, and Madan Sharma under whose guidance I learnt the basics of the game,” Dhawan said. I would also like to thank my team with whom I have played cricket for so long. I got another family, I got name, fame and love of all the fans,” he said.

When I am calling time on my career, I am at peace because I have played so much for country. I am thankful to BCCI and DDCA for giving me the opportunity. I am also thankful to the fans, who has given me so much love over the years,” the left hander further said. “I am telling myself one thing that don’t be sad that you will not be able to represent India again but he is happy that he has played for India for so long. For me the biggest thing is that I played,” Dhawan concluded.

A Career of Impact

Shikhar Dhawan, who made his international debut in 2010, has amassed over 10,000 runs in international cricket, including 24 centuries—17 in ODIs and 7 in Tests. His aggressive play and powerful hitting made him a standout performer, and he was a key member of the Indian squad that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.

Dhawan’s career has been marked by several significant milestones. His 185 on Test debut against Australia in Mohali was a highlight, as he reached his century in just 85 balls, setting a record for the fastest century by a debutant. He also formed a successful partnership with Rohit Sharma at the top of the Indian batting lineup.

IPL Legacy

Dhawan is also a notable IPL player, having appeared in 222 matches and scoring 6,769 runs, including two centuries and 51 half-centuries. He holds the record for the most fours (768) in the tournament and was the first to hit consecutive centuries. He played a key role in the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 2016 title win and has also played for Delhi, Mumbai, and Punjab, captaining Delhi and Punjab at various times.
