T20 World Cup 2024: Stars Missing in Action

The T20 World Cup is back, with the best cricketing nations battling it out for glory in the USA and Caribbean. While some familiar faces are lighting up the tournament, there are also some notable absentees from the 2022 edition. Here’s a look at 10 big names who won’t be featuring this time around.

Aaron Finch (Australia): The former Aussie skipper called it quits from international cricket altogether before the 2022 World Cup. Despite battling through the tournament, his struggles with swing and power hitting continued, and he’s now pursuing a career in Australian television.

Dawid Malan (England): Selected for the 2022 World Cup with some reservations, Malan’s form deserted him at the crucial moment, leading to his exclusion during the knockout stages. The emergence of younger talents like Phil Salt and Will Jacks sealed his fate.

Steven Smith (Australia): Though a mainstay in other formats, Smith has been on the fringes of Australia’s T20 setup for a while. Given limited opportunities even in the 2022 World Cup, he’s been overlooked for the 2024 edition.

Ben Stokes (England): Never quite comfortable in the shortest format, Stokes’ inclusion in 2022 raised eyebrows. While he delivered a match-winning knock in the final, he’s opted out this time to prioritize his Test match fitness.

Dinesh Karthik (India): A star performer in the 2022 IPL, Karthik barely received chances in Australia. With Rishabh Pant preferred for the crucial semi-final, and age not on his side, he’s fallen out of favor with the selectors.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz (Bangladesh): Bangladesh’s former T20 vice-captain, Miraz, was sidelined earlier this year, leading to the selection of Mahedi Hasan, another off-spinning allrounder.

Chris Woakes (England): A vital cog in England’s limited-overs success, Woakes’ absence, along with Stokes’, signifies a shift for the team. With the World Cup being held in the USA and Caribbean, his new-ball swing, which thrives in helpful conditions, wasn’t deemed a priority.

Harshal Patel (India): Patel’s exceptional offcutter was a nightmare for batsmen in 2021 and 22. However, an injury robbed him of that magic touch. While he regained form in the recent IPL, the Indian selectors likely saw him as a less attractive option.

Lungi Ngidi (South Africa): A back injury sidelined the fearsome pacer from the IPL this year. Despite recovering in time for selection, South Africa opted for the express pace of Anrich Nortje instead. Ngidi’s inconsistent performances in the lead-up series sealed his exclusion.

The T20 World Cup stage is constantly evolving, with new stars emerging and strategies changing. While these players might be missing this time around, their contributions to the game won’t be forgotten. The cricketing world will be eagerly waiting to see if they can make a comeback in future editions.
