U19 World Cup 2024 Final: India outclassed by Australia

India’s battle to grab the title at the U19 World Cup 2024 ended in a heart-wrenching loss to Australia in the final. Despite their best efforts, India fell short, finishing as runners-up for the fourth time overall and the third time in the last five editions. The much-anticipated clash saw the Indian team struggle, soon dismantled after a flawless bowling display.

In the important final match, India’s star batters, including Captain Uday Saharan, Musheer Khan, and Sachin Dhas, didn’t perform well. Australia decided to bat first and scored a strong total of 253 runs, which is the highest in any final of the U19 Men’s World Cup tournament. Fast bowler Mahli Beardman and spinner Raf MacMillan each took 3 wickets, leading to India getting all out for 174 runs in 43.5 overs. This ruined India’s hope of achieving a record-breaking run chase. When Callum Vidler dismissed Arshin Kulkarni, one of India’s top players, the Indian team started to feel nervous. Shortly after, Adarsh Singh got out, becoming Mahli Beardman’s third victim.

India had three batters, Captain Uday Saharan, Musheer Khan, and Sachin Dhas who scored big until the finals. However, in the final match, all three of them got out early. Despite leading India’s batting performance in the tournament with 397 runs in seven matches, Captain Uday Saharan couldn’t save India in the final, getting dismissed for just 8 runs. Sachin Dhas, who was a hero in the semi-finals with a match-winning 96 against South Africa, was also dismissed early, caught behind for 9 runs by spinner Raf MacMillan.

It feels like Australia has a strong grip over India, dominating them in men’s ICC tournaments in the recent past. Just two months ago, a team led by Pat Cummins defeated India in the final of the ICC Men’s World Cup in Ahmedabad. Before that, India lost the ICC World Test Championship final to Australia in June at the Oval in London. Australia’s success extends beyond men’s tournaments; they are now champions of the senior men’s 50-over World Cup, the World Test Championship, the women’s T20 World Cup, and the senior women’s 50-over World Cup, in addition to the U19 men’s World Cup. Also, in the last commonwealth, Australian women defeated Indian women in the finals.

The story of the U19 World Cup 2024 and ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is very similar. In the U19 World Cup, India, led by Uday Saharan, reached the final unbeaten after dominating their opponents. However, they were outplayed by Australia’s smashing performance. Captain Hugh Weibgen played a crucial role, scoring 48 runs and leading his team effectively while defending their total of 253.

Mahli Beardman is the player of the match for his 3/15 while South Africa fast-bowler Kwena Maphaka is the player of the tournament for his 21 wickets in six matches.
