Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has made a sensational return to India’s T20I squad after nearly four years, earning a place in the 16-member team for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand.
The 36-year-old pacer last represented India in November 2022 and has now been rewarded for his impressive performances in the IPL. His recall comes as India prepare for the New Zealand tour, with Jasprit Bumrah rested for the T20I leg of the assignment.
Bhuvneshwar’s return is one of the biggest talking points from India’s latest T20I squad announcement.
The experienced seamer has remained a highly respected white-ball bowler despite being away from the national setup for several years. His ability to swing the new ball, control the powerplay and contribute at the death has once again brought him into India’s plans.
His last international appearance came in 2022, meaning the New Zealand series will provide Bhuvneshwar with an opportunity to restart his India career after a lengthy absence.
Bhuvneshwar’s performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru played a major role in his comeback.
The pacer was an important part of RCB’s back-to-back IPL title-winning campaigns in 2025 and 2026. During IPL 2026, he recorded 28 wickets at an economy rate of 7.95, one of the strongest seasons of his career. Across the last two IPL editions, he collected 45 wickets for RCB.
His ability to perform against top-level batters and deliver in different phases of T20 matches appears to have convinced the selectors that his experience can still benefit India.
India have opted to rest their premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.
That decision opens an important opportunity for Bhuvneshwar to take on a leadership role within a relatively young pace group. The squad also includes Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav among the specialist fast bowlers.
Bhuvneshwar’s international experience could be particularly valuable for Mayank and Prince as they continue developing at the highest level.
One of the interesting tactical possibilities for India will be a new-ball partnership between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh.
Both bowlers are capable of moving the ball early in an innings, although they bring different styles and experience to the attack.
Bhuvneshwar’s ability to exploit swing and seam movement could complement Arshdeep’s left-arm angle. With Bumrah unavailable for the T20I series, the pair could potentially shoulder a significant share of India’s powerplay responsibilities.
Bhuvneshwar is not the only notable change to India’s T20I squad.
Spinner Varun Chakravarthy has also returned after missing India’s recent assignments because of injury. He replaces Ravi Bishnoi, who has been left out of the New Zealand squad.
Varun’s return gives India another mystery-spin option alongside Kuldeep Yadav, strengthening the team’s bowling variety.
Shreyas Iyer will continue as India’s T20I captain for the New Zealand series, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain.
The squad otherwise remains largely familiar, with several players from the ongoing West Indies T20I series retaining their places. Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also been included in the squad.
India and New Zealand will play five T20Is from October 22 to November 1.
The series will be followed by ODI and Test assignments, with the squads for those formats to be announced separately.
The T20I series therefore gives India’s management an opportunity to assess several players while also managing the workload of key first-choice cricketers.
Bhuvneshwar’s recall is significant for several reasons.
First, it demonstrates that India’s selectors are willing to reward current form rather than focus exclusively on age or long-term succession planning. At 36, Bhuvneshwar has earned another opportunity through his performances rather than reputation alone.
Second, his experience could provide stability to a pace attack containing younger options such as Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav.
Finally, the New Zealand conditions could suit Bhuvneshwar’s skill set. His ability to generate movement with the new ball has historically been one of his biggest strengths.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s India career appeared to have moved into the past after his last international appearance in 2022.
However, his performances in the IPL have changed that narrative.
Now, the veteran seamer has another opportunity to prove that he can still make an impact at international level. The New Zealand series could become an important test of whether Bhuvneshwar can translate his recent domestic and IPL success back into the international arena.
For India, meanwhile, his return provides valuable experience at a time when the team is also looking towards the next generation of fast bowlers.
After nearly four years away from international cricket, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in India’s T20I plans — and the New Zealand series could mark the beginning of an unexpected second chapter in his international career.

For 138 years, Test cricket lived by the sun. Play began in the morning, ended in the late afternoon, and the traditional red ball glinted under natural light exactly as it always had.

The excitement of IPL 2026 has finally come to an end, and after months of representing their respective franchises, India's biggest cricket stars are now back together in national colors.
