India have brought teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi back into the playing XI for the second T20 International against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24, 2026. Captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first, with dew expected to influence conditions during the match.
Sooryavanshi replaces Ishan Kishan, who has been ruled out of the second T20I after sustaining a low-grade right adductor strain during the series opener. However, the young left-hander will not open the innings and is instead set to bat at No. 3, with India retaining Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as their opening pair.
India have made two changes to their lineup ahead of the Christchurch encounter. Sooryavanshi comes in for the injured Kishan, while fast bowler Prince Yadav replaces Mayank Yadav as a tactical adjustment.
Explaining the decision to bowl first, Iyer pointed to the dew factor and said the team wanted to maintain its aggressive approach while improving its execution in the field.
New Zealand have also made one change, with Jacob Duffy replacing Adam Milne. Captain Mitchell Santner indicated that the change was part of a rotation plan for the team’s fast bowlers ahead of a busy schedule.
Sooryavanshi’s inclusion is one of the biggest talking points ahead of the second match. The young batter has attracted attention for his aggressive stroke play, but his return comes with a different challenge: adapting to a position outside his usual opening role.
India have chosen to keep Samson and Abhishek together after their impressive performance in the first T20I. Sooryavanshi will therefore have an opportunity to demonstrate his versatility in the middle order.
According to India Today, his previous experience at No. 3 included a Youth Test appearance against Australia Under-19 in October 2025, when he scored 20 off 14 balls in the first innings. The Christchurch match offers a new opportunity to test his adaptability in senior international T20 cricket.
India head into the second T20I with momentum after winning the opening match by four wickets. Chasing New Zealand’s 225/4, India reached 230/6 in 19.4 overs to secure a memorable victory.
Sanju Samson led the chase with 67 off 33 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer scored 42 off 28 deliveries. Naman Dhir provided the finishing push with an unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls, helping India cross the target with two balls remaining.
For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips struck an unbeaten 82 off 40 balls, and Finn Allen contributed 45 off 24 deliveries. Despite their substantial total, the hosts could not prevent India from taking the series lead.

India: Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav.

India will aim to build on their opening victory, while New Zealand will look to level the series. Sooryavanshi’s performance at No. 3 will be particularly interesting, as the youngster gets an opportunity to adjust to a new batting position at the international level.
India’s decision to bowl first also places the responsibility on their attack to restrict New Zealand before the chase. With the series still in its early stages, the second T20I could prove important in shaping the momentum of the remaining matches.
