Largest Victories by Runs in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is a tournament known for its close finishes and nail-biting matches. However, there have also been occasions where a team has displayed complete dominance, crushing their opponents by a massive margin.  Let’s take a look at the biggest victories by runs in T20 World Cup history!

Sri Lanka

The crown for the most convincing win belongs to Sri Lanka.  Back in the 2007 World Cup, they put on a batting masterclass against Kenya.  Sri Lanka piled up a mammoth total of 260 runs in their 20 overs, thanks to some brilliant batting performances.  In reply, Kenya’s batting line-up faltered under the pressure of the huge target, and they were eventually bundled out for a mere 88 runs. This staggering 172-run victory remains the biggest win in T20 World Cup history.

South Africa

South Africa also finds a place on this list with their dominant performance against Scotland in the 2009 World Cup.  The Proteas posted a daunting total of 212 runs on the board, showcasing some aggressive batting.  Scotland’s chase never really got going, and they were restricted to just 82 runs, giving South Africa a convincing 130-run victory.

Afghanistan

More recently, in the 2021 World Cup, Afghanistan registered their biggest win in the tournament against Scotland.  After electing to bat, Afghanistan put up a competitive total of 191 runs.  Their bowling attack then ripped through the Scottish batting order, dismissing them for a paltry 61 runs. This emphatic 130-run victory showcased the rising potential of the Afghan cricket team.

These dominant victories highlight the vast differences in skill and experience that can sometimes exist between teams in the T20 World Cup.  While these are outlier moments, they add another layer of excitement to the tournament, leaving fans wondering if a new record-breaking win might be on the horizon in upcoming editions.
