South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has praised his team’s resilience and fighting spirit after the Proteas defeated Australia by 176 runs in the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town. The victory secured a 2–1 series win and helped South Africa reclaim the No. 1 position in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings for the first time in more than a decade.
Bavuma described the triumph as the best Test win of his career, highlighting the character shown by his players after they found themselves under pressure at different stages of the series.
South Africa began the three-match contest with a 214-run defeat in Durban. However, they bounced back strongly, winning the second Test by an innings and 31 runs before producing another impressive comeback in Cape Town.
The series victory also marked another significant achievement under Bavuma’s leadership, adding to South Africa’s growing success in international Test cricket.
Speaking after the Cape Town Test, Bavuma credited his players for showing determination whenever the team faced difficult situations.
The South African captain acknowledged Australia’s quality but said his team repeatedly found ways to fight back when they were behind in a match.
Bavuma explained that resilience had become an important characteristic of South African cricket. He also described the series as an enthralling contest between two quality teams.
The captain said the team had sometimes found themselves in awe of Australia but managed to respond through their fighting spirit and ability to perform under pressure.
He further stated that South Africa wanted to maintain high standards and leave the Proteas badge in a better position.

The victory over Australia was particularly special for Bavuma because of the challenges South Africa faced throughout the series.
After losing the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs, the Proteas needed a strong response to remain competitive. They delivered that response in Gqeberha, winning the second match by an innings and 31 runs.
The deciding Test in Cape Town presented another major challenge. South Africa conceded a 100-run first-innings lead and were under pressure in their second innings.
However, the batting unit recovered, and the bowlers completed the job on the final day.
Reflecting on the contest, Bavuma said he had not been involved in a better series and considered the victory his best Test win.
The achievement was especially meaningful because South Africa had to overcome difficult match situations against a highly competitive Australian side.
South Africa secured the series after bowling Australia out for just 111 runs in their fourth innings.
Australia began the final day needing 288 runs for victory, but Kagiso Rabada delivered a devastating opening spell.
Rabada dismissed Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne in his first over before removing Travis Head later in the morning. Head’s dismissal also gave Rabada his 350th Test wicket.
Off-spinner Simon Harmer then took control of the innings, producing career-best figures of 6/16 in 21.1 overs.
Harmer removed several Australian batters, including Cameron Green and Pat Cummins, to bring South Africa close to victory. He also claimed the final wicket, completing an outstanding bowling performance.
Australia were eventually dismissed for 111, handing South Africa a 176-run victory.
South Africa’s victory was built on a crucial batting recovery during the second innings.
The hosts had lost early wickets and were effectively 40 for four at the beginning of the fourth day. Their position looked difficult, particularly after Australia had secured a 100-run first-innings advantage.
Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder responded with outstanding centuries, building a partnership that changed the direction of the match.
Their contributions helped South Africa recover and establish a competitive target of 288 runs for Australia.
The batting recovery gave the bowling attack an opportunity to defend the total on the final day, and Rabada and Harmer made full use of it.
The series victory helped South Africa move above Australia to become the No. 1 team in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings.
The Proteas last held the top position in January 2016, making their return to the summit a significant milestone for the team.
Bavuma described the achievement as exceptional and said reaching the top had been one of the team’s ambitions.
He added that the players wanted to continue improving their standards and make the national team’s identity stronger.
It is important to distinguish the ICC Test Team Rankings from the World Test Championship standings. Although South Africa moved to No. 1 in the Test team rankings, they are second in the 2025–27 World Test Championship table, behind New Zealand. Australia dropped to third in the WTC standings following the Cape Town defeat.

| First Test, Durban | Australia won by 214 runs |
| Second Test, Gqeberha | South Africa won by an innings and 31 runs |
| Third Test, Cape Town | South Africa won by 176 runs |
South Africa’s two consecutive victories after losing the opening match demonstrated their ability to respond under pressure.
The Cape Town result also completed a memorable series for Bavuma’s side, which had to overcome Australia’s strong batting and bowling performances to secure the trophy.
South Africa will look to carry their winning momentum into their upcoming international assignments.
The Proteas are scheduled to host Bangladesh for a two-Test series, beginning on November 15 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The second Test is scheduled to take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion from November 23 to 27.
For Bavuma and his team, the immediate challenge will be maintaining the standards that helped them defeat Australia and reclaim the top position in the ICC Test rankings.
Conclusion: Temba Bavuma’s praise for South Africa’s resilience reflects the effort behind their memorable 2–1 series victory over Australia. From recovering after the Durban defeat to completing a dominant performance in Cape Town, the Proteas demonstrated their ability to fight back under pressure. Their return to the No. 1 position in the ICC Test rankings makes the achievement even more significant.
