Rohit Sharma, the captain of India‘s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, has credited three key individuals for the team’s success: Rahul Dravid, Ajit Agarkar, and Jay Shah. These three pillars, as Sharma calls them, provided unwavering support and guidance, creating an environment where players could thrive and perform at their best.
Under Sharma’s leadership, India showcased exceptional teamwork and resilience, culminating in a well-deserved victory against South Africa in the final. This triumph marked India’s second T20 World Cup title and ended an 11-year drought of ICC trophies.
Sharma emphasized the importance of creating a positive and supportive environment for the players. He acknowledged the significant contributions of Dravid, Agarkar, and Shah in fostering such an atmosphere. Their unwavering belief in the team’s abilities and their unwavering support played a crucial role in India’s success.
“It was my dream to transform this team and not worry too much about the stats, the results, to make sure that we create that environment where people can go out there and play freely without thinking too much. That is what was required. I got a lot of help from my three pillars, who are actually Mr Jay Shah, Mr Rahul Dravid (and the) chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar,” Rohit said after being named the men’s international cricketer of the year at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards here.
In addition to the leadership trio, Sharma also highlighted the individual contributions of the players. He praised their dedication, skill, and ability to perform under pressure. Each player played a vital role in India’s journey to the title, showcasing their talent and commitment to the team’s success.
“That was very critical for me to do what I did and obviously not to forget the players, who came in at different points in time and helped the team to achieve what we achieved. Rohit said the feeling of winning the World Cup could not be described in words. It was a feeling that cannot come every day. It was something that we were really hoping for. When we won the World Cup, it was important for all of us to enjoy the moment which we did pretty well and thanks to our nation as well for celebrating with us,” Rohit Sharma concluded.
Sharma expressed his immense pride and joy in winning the World Cup, acknowledging the significance of this achievement for both the team and the nation. The victory brought immense happiness and celebration to countless fans across India.
“As much as it meant for us, it meant a whole lot to the entire nation as well. It felt really great to bring it (trophy) back home here and celebrate with everyone here.” “(It is a) fantastic feeling that can never be put out in words. I don’t think it’s a feeling that can be expressed. It won’t do justice to our effect when all that happened,” Rohit said.
Beyond his leadership and cricketing prowess, Sharma also shared insights into his personal approach to the game. He revealed that he is not overly concerned with the specific weight or feel of his bat, preferring to focus on the balance and comfort it provides. This approach reflects his pragmatic and intuitive style of play.
