Indian batters to score double hundreds in consecutive Tests

Reaching a double century is a significant achievement for any batter In their careers as testers, only few players have accomplished this accomplishment. Only a few batters have, nonetheless, amassed double hundreds in back-to-back test matches. There had only been two Indians in this esteemed list for the longest time possible. However, now, another Indian batter joined this illustrious list. The consistency required to accomplish this iconic feat is immense.

Let’s take a look at the only three batters to have consecutive double-hundreds for Team India in Test cricket.

Virat Kohli – 213 & 225* vs Sri Lanka, 2017

Virat Kohli currently holds the record for the most double hundreds scored by an Indian batsman in test cricket, with 7 to his name. In 2017, he showcased his peak form against Sri Lanka, starting with a duck in the first match but bouncing back spectacularly, never to look back.

Kohli’s standout performances included a superb century in Kolkata, followed by double centuries in Nagpur and Delhi. Kohli made a superb 213 off only 267 balls in Nagpur before following it up with a splendid 225* in Delhi. He even made another half-century in the second innings of the Delhi Test as the game ended in a draw.  He averaged an incredible 75.64 in Tests that year, with five scores exceeding 100 runs. It was a peak performance unlikely to be matched. Virat Kohli was on absolute fire in Test cricket during this time.

Yashasvi Jaiswal – 209 & 214* vs England, 2024

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s growing career in Test has seen him make a significant mark despite playing just seven matches. His remarkable ability to convert fifties into centuries showcases his hunger for big scores. After an impressive 80 in the first Test, he elevated his performance with a stellar 209 in the following match in Visakhapatnam, helping India level the series.

In Rajkot, despite an initial setback, he fought through a back spasm to score an unbeaten 214*, including of a record-equaling 12 sixes, tilting the scales in favor of the hosts. Remarkably, Jaiswal wasn’t awarded the Player of the Match in either Test, despite his standout performances.

Vinod Kambli – 224 vs England & 227 vs Zimbabwe, 1993

Vinod Kambli’s Test career began with promise but quickly dimmed, as he played only 17 matches for India. Following his debut in January 1993, he showed immense talent scoring 224, highlighted by his maiden century and subsequent double ton in his fourth Test innings against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai; and 227, including a double-century against Zimbabwe in Delhi.

He maintained good form with two more centuries against Sri Lanka. However, his decline set in by March 1994, enduring ten innings without a half-century and three ducks. He played his final Test in November 1995, marking the end of a once-promising career.
