Jasprit Bumrah Reclaims No. 1 Spot in ICC Test Bowling Rankings

Jasprit Bumrah has once again made history, reclaiming the prestigious title of the No. 1 Test bowler in the world. The star Indian pacer achieved this feat after his impressive performance in India’s recent Test series against Bangladesh, where he picked up 11 wickets across two matches. Bumrah’s stellar bowling has placed him back on top of the ICC Test bowling rankings with 870 points, surpassing his teammate Ravichandran Ashwin, who closely follows with 869 points.

This achievement marks Bumrah’s second stint as the top-ranked bowler. He first reached the No. 1 spot in February 2023, becoming the first Indian fast bowler to achieve this milestone. His latest accomplishment is a testament to his consistency and skill, particularly in a format where spinners like Ashwin have traditionally dominated for India.

In the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, both Bumrah and Ashwin were pivotal in India’s 2-0 whitewash. The duo emerged as the joint-highest wicket-takers, each claiming 11 wickets. Bumrah’s consistent performance, which included taking three wickets in each innings of the second Test in Kanpur, played a crucial role in India’s seven-wicket victory. Despite Ashwin’s stellar all-round performance, which included a match-winning century in the first Test, Bumrah managed to edge past him by a single point in the rankings.

Ashwin’s contributions were equally remarkable, earning him the Player of the Series award. Apart from his 11 wickets, the seasoned off-spinner also scored 114 runs, including a crucial century in Chennai. However, it was Bumrah’s overall impact with the ball that earned him the top spot, solidifying his place as one of the best fast bowlers in the world.

India’s dominance in the latest ICC rankings doesn’t stop there. Ravindra Jadeja, another key player in India’s bowling attack, is ranked sixth with 809 points. Meanwhile, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made significant strides in the Test batting rankings. Jaiswal, after impressive knocks of 72 and 51 in the series, jumped to third place in the ICC Test batting rankings, marking a high point in his career after just 11 Test matches.

Virat Kohli also made a notable return to the top 10 Test batters, climbing six spots to the sixth position. His performance, coupled with India’s solid team efforts, has bolstered their standing in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) table. Following the Bangladesh series, India remains on course for their third consecutive WTC final appearance, firmly holding the top position.

Bumrah’s rise to the No. 1 spot not only highlights his individual brilliance but also underscores the strength of India’s bowling unit. Together with Ashwin, Jadeja, and a rising crop of talented players, India continues to assert its dominance in world cricket, both in rankings and on the field.
