Glenn Maxwell Retires from International Cricket After 14-Year Career

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 14-year career with the national team. The 38-year-old has also stepped away from Victoria’s List A and first-class cricket, but will continue playing franchise T20 cricket.

Maxwell confirmed the decision in an episode of The Final Word podcast. His retirement comes after Australia’s recent focus on younger players and the end of his hopes of receiving an international farewell at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The explosive batter had already retired from One-Day Internationals in June 2025. His final international appearance came against Oman during the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup.

Glenn Maxwell’s International Career Comes to an End

Maxwell represented Australia in 286 international matches, featuring in 149 ODIs, 130 T20 Internationals and seven Test matches.

He became one of the most recognisable players in white-ball cricket, known for his unconventional shot-making, explosive batting and ability to change the course of a match in a short period.

Maxwell scored 3,990 runs in ODIs and 2,897 runs in T20Is. He also contributed with his off-spin, taking wickets across formats and providing Australia with a valuable all-round option.

His international career included ten centuries and 136 wickets, according to the ICC’s career summary.

Maxwell’s Retirement Decision and the MCG Farewell

Maxwell said discussions about his future had been taking place for some time. Australia’s selection plans for upcoming white-ball series indicated that the team was moving towards giving younger players more international opportunities.

The all-rounder had considered the possibility of playing a farewell match at the MCG during Australia’s upcoming T20I series against England. However, he understood the team’s decision to focus on its next generation.

Maxwell’s retirement also allows him to focus more closely on his physical condition. He said he needed to invest more time in his body to remain fit for the remaining tournaments of his playing career.

Glenn Maxwell’s Memorable 201* Against Afghanistan

One of Maxwell’s most iconic performances came during the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup against Afghanistan in Mumbai.

Australia were in serious trouble at 91/7 while chasing 292. Maxwell produced an extraordinary unbeaten 201 from 128 balls, guiding Australia to a remarkable three-wicket victory.

The innings, played despite physical discomfort, is widely regarded as one of the greatest individual performances in ODI history.

Maxwell also recorded the fastest century in men’s ODI World Cup history at the time, reaching 100 in just 40 balls against the Netherlands during the same tournament.

Three ICC World Cup Titles with Australia

Maxwell was part of three major World Cup-winning Australian teams during his international career.

Tournament Australia’s Achievement
2015 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Champions
2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Champions
2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Champions

His role varied across the tournaments, but his ability to provide explosive batting and useful off-spin made him an important member of Australia’s white-ball setup.

Maxwell’s T20I Records and Batting Legacy

Maxwell finished his T20I career with 2,897 runs at a strike rate above 154. He scored five centuries in the format, a record he shares with India’s Rohit Sharma.

His aggressive approach made him a key figure in Australia’s T20 batting lineup. Maxwell was also known for his ability to play unconventional shots and exploit different areas of the field, making him a difficult batter for opponents to contain.

His contributions with the ball and in the field further strengthened his reputation as one of Australia’s most versatile white-ball players.

Glenn Maxwell to Continue Playing for Melbourne Stars

Although Maxwell has retired from international cricket and Victoria’s 50-over and four-day competitions, he is not ending his professional career entirely.

He will continue playing franchise T20 cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. The Stars have Maxwell under contract until the end of the 2027–28 season.

The decision to step away from international cricket is expected to give him more time to manage his fitness and prepare for the remaining tournaments of his career.

What Glenn Maxwell’s Retirement Means for Australian Cricket

Maxwell’s retirement marks the end of an era for Australia’s white-ball cricket. His explosive batting and unpredictable style brought a different dimension to the team, particularly in the middle order.

Australia will now look to younger players to fill the roles he occupied across T20Is and other international formats.

With the 2028 Olympic Games approaching, Australia’s focus on building depth and exposing emerging players to international competition is likely to continue.

Conclusion

Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket after representing Australia in 286 matches across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. The 38-year-old leaves behind a career highlighted by three World Cup titles, an extraordinary unbeaten double century against Afghanistan and a record five T20I centuries.

While his international journey has come to an end, Maxwell will continue playing franchise T20 cricket, including for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. His retirement closes a memorable chapter in Australian cricket, but fans will still have opportunities to watch the “Big Show” in action.
