Youngest Indian Batsmen to Hit a Double Century in Test Cricket

Batting in test cricket stands as one of the most exciting parts of the game, where a century indicates a substantial landmark for any batter. However, achieving a double century uplifts the accomplishment to a rare and extraordinary level in the domain of test cricket. And such an achievement requires an extraordinary amount of determination and focus.

India’s cricketing history brags a whole lot of fabulous batsmen who have left an eternal mark on the sport. Among them, a few have successfully made their mark in the initial part of their careers with consecutive tons, double or even triple centuries. Vinod Kambli is one of the rare Indian batsmen who achieved the remarkable feat of scoring consecutive double centuries in test cricket.

Vinod Kambli – 21 years 32 days

Kambli was just 21 years and 32 days old when he scripted history as he smashed a double century in test cricket, making him India’s youngest player to do so. Displaying his extent of talent and skills, the former left-handed batter Kambli scored 224 runs including 23 fours, off 411 balls, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, playing a crucial role in India’s victory by 15 runs against England in 1993.

Sunil Gavaskar – 21 years 277 days

At a mere 21 years and 277 days old, Sunil Gavaskar made history by smashing his maiden double hundred in test cricket, during his debut series against the West Indies in the 1971 tour. Before this achieving extraordinary performance, Gavaskar had already showcased his astonishing skills by smashing three centuries on the tour.

Yashasvi Jaiswal – 22 years 37 days

Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed his first-ever test double-century in February 2024 against England, in Visakhapatnam. Jaiswal was just 22 years and 37 days old when he displayed his outstanding control and skill, amassing 209 runs off 290 balls, which included 19 boundaries and seven sixes, dominating the English bowlers. With this achievement, he ranks as the third youngest Indian batter to score a double hundred in test cricket

Mansoor Ali Khan – 23 years 34 days

The former captain of India, Mansoor Ali Khan was 23 years and 34 days old when he hit his first-ever double century in 1964, at Feroz Shah Kotla (now Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium) in Delhi against England. Also called the Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan scored 203 runs, with 23 fours and two sixes. He is surely one of the greatest cricketers India has ever produced.
