Indian batter, Yashasvi Jaiswal, became the latest player to join an elite club of cricketers with consecutive double hundreds in Test cricket. Yashasvi Jaiswal has now joined the exclusive club of players with consecutive double-hundreds in Test matches. During England’s 2024 Test series in India, Jaiswal displayed remarkable consistency, scoring over 200 runs in both the second and third matches.
This achievement catapulted Jaiswal into the company of legends like Sir Donald Bradman, Wally Hammond, and Virat Kohli. He is also the third youngest to do so, just behind Vinod Kambli and the legendary Don Bradman. Sir Don Bradman and Wally Hammond are the two batters who have hit back-to-back double-hundreds on two separate occasions. Let’s take a look at all the batters who have scored consecutive double-centuries in Test Cricket.
Wally Hammond
In 1928, English batting legend Wally Hammond became the first player to score back-to-back double centuries in Tests. Touring Australia, he smashed 251 and 200, in the second and third Tests respectively, leading England to a dominant 4-1 series win. His 905 runs shadowed all others, leaving an unforgettable mark on cricketing history.
One of the only two batters with consecutive double hundreds in Tests on two different instances, England’s Wally Hammond took his batting legacy to a new height in 1933. In New Zealand, he smashed 227 in Christchurch, in the first Test and then a dominant 336* in Auckland in the second Test.
Sir Don Bradman
Arguably the greatest batter Test cricket has ever seen, Sir Don Bradman cemented his legend in 1930, scoring a staggering 974 runs in just 7 Ashes innings, a record untouched to this day. His twin centuries, 254 in the second Test at Lord’s and 334 in the next Test left England bewildered and Australia victorious.
Then Seven years after Wally Hammond’s feat, achieving consecutive double centuries against England, this time on home soil. Facing a daunting 0-2 deficit, Bradman orchestrated a miraculous comeback. In a rain-affected Melbourne Test, batting at number seven, he scored a monumental 270. The momentum continued, with Bradman adding another 212 in the final Test, leading Australia to a stunning 3-2 series victory, forever known as the greatest Ashes comeback ever.
Vinod Kambli
Young Indian southpaw Vinod Kambli became the first from India to score consecutive Test double centuries. In his third Test, the left-hand batter grinded England down with 224 in Mumbai, followed by a dominant 227 off 301 in the next one-off Test against Zimbabwe, leading India to victory in both.
Kumar Sangakkara
Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara feasted on Bangladeshi bowling in 2007, making him the fourth player to register consecutive double hundreds in Tests. Starting with 200* in Colombo, later smashing 222* in Kandy. Both innings resulted in dominant Sri Lankan victories by an innings.
Michael Clarke
Aussie skipper Michael Clarke cemented his batting prowess in late 2012, scoring consecutive double-centuries against South Africa. He hammered 259* at the Gabba and 230 in the second Test in Adelaide, solidifying his place among the batting elite. Clarke became the fifth batter to hit consecutive 200s in Test cricket.
Virat Kohli
Kohli etched his name in history with consecutive double tons against Sri Lanka in 2017. He hammered 213 off 267 balls and 243 off 287 balls in Nagpur and Delhi respectively in the second Test of Sri Lanka’s tour of India, showcasing his dominance and adding to his record six double centuries in a phenomenal 17-month period.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
The lastest addition to the list is the young Indian player Yashasvi Jaiswal who has smashed consecutive double centuries, becoming the third Indian to do so. He hammered 209 in Visakhapatnam in the first innings of the second Test and an unbeaten 214 in 236 balls in in the next game in Rajkot, levelling the record for sixes in an innings and helping India dominate England, sending the ball over the ropes 12 times.
